THX was conceived by George Lucas whom on the release of the Star Wars trilogy found himself disappointed with the reproduction in ageing cinema around the world. George pondered the question of why spend so much time on audio visual production of a film, if there was no means for people to see or hear the film as the director intended.
George called on audio scientist Tomlinson Holman to examine film audio from mastering to playback, Holman was given one year to design a set of specifications for Skywalker Ranch’s state of the art production facilities. During this time Holman discovered that most commercial cinemas in operation were in dire need of upgrading, with most not having any technological update since the early 1940’s.
On the completion of Skywalker sound and the Stag Theatre, Lucas started to receive many inquiries about incorporating this new benchmark standard into their ageing commercial theatres, thus THX was born.
