High Resolution Audio

Along with the Full HD 1080P images, Blu Ray disc has been able to deliver us two new high resolution sound formats Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio, both of these codec ‘s are considered lossless formats.

Blu Ray disc and its storage capacity has allowed studios to create soundtracks that can be mastered to disc bit for bit allowing viewers to hear a soundtrack as intended. This is expressed with a film such as Apocalypto (2006), a DTS Master Audio soundtrack with an outstanding score and effects that would not be possible to fit on DVD. From the smallest of insects, rain, and the whistle of an arrow through the air to the roar of the city crowd all of the action is audible as well as visible immersing the viewer in the jungle along with Jaguar Paw (the lead cast member).

Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio have also allowed for more channels of audio, bringing the reality of commercial cinema to your residence. Both sound formats support 8 discrete channels of audio verses the Dolby Digital and DTS’s previous 6 channel capability. Both of the high resolution audio codecs require HDMI to be used as the connection.

The high resolution codec’s offer a variable bit rate of up to 24.5 Mbit/s on a Blu-ray Disc, Dolby digital 5.1 used a constant bit rate of 320kbit/s. This increase in bit rate leads to a higher fidelity audio experience.

The DTS Master Audio codec is currently the most widely adopted format on Blu Ray Disc. Come into one of our stores today for an audition.
