Introduced in 2009, the latest innovation from the Dolby labs adds a height channel to the main left and right front channels. This front height adds a new level of dimension to the existing 2.0/5.1/7.1 soundtracks by adding the vertical sound plane to the existing horizontal sound plane.
By expanding on the popular Prologic IIx format, Dolby labs have being able to create a processor that reads spatial and ambient sounds, such as rain, wind and effects like helicopters and planes, this information is then sent to the two front height channels for a greater dimension of “surround sound” while maintaining the integrity of the original source mix.
The beauty of Dolby Prologic IIz is the fact that any program source (CD, DVD, BD or Game) is able to be used and processed, this allows the user to define the “space, depth and airiness” across their software library.
By operating as a matrix channel the height channels blend into, and do not overpower the main left and right channels, only reproducing appropriate non directional sounds. Hear the plane fly overhead, the rain on the roof or place yourself in the centre of your favourite concert the Prologic IIz format is able to deliver this “depth” of sound.
If you are unable to place 7.1 surround back speakers in your current or future setup, consider adding the vertical height channels for a more realistic surround sound experience.
