The newest kid on the block, the much hyped arrival on 3D is here.
Active or liquid crystal shutter glasses work on alternating the polarisation of the two lenses allowing the left eye to see only the information intended for it. The sync with the refresh rate of the title 50 times per second (or 24 times on a 24P title) this alternating frame packing is what gives the extra perception of depth in the image. This technology has advanced from the early stereoscopic film and photos of yesteryear. All active glasses require a battery to power the polarization of the lens.
Passive glasses such as the type used in commercial cinemas are simply custom sunglasses with a polarization difference between the two lenses. This polarization difference is what filters the image to give the perception of 3D.
There are many means of showing 3D images to an equipped display panel or screen and many manufactures use different methods of achieving this. TV panels and projection also differ in the way the 3D image is displayed and level of depth.
